Riverview Gardens High School students received a lesson in "yes, and" this week as alumnus and Hollywood actor BJ Lange returned to his alma mater to lead a free improv comedy workshop.
The event, held Jan. 8, invited students, staff and fellow alumni to engage in applied improvisation— a technique that uses theatrical tools to boost real-world skills like communication, adaptability and public speaking.
Lange, a member of the Riverview Gardens High School Class of 1999, has built a prolific career in Los Angeles as an actor, comedian and television host. A member of SAG-AFTRA and AEA, his credits include appearances on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "The Rookie," "General Hospital" and "MTV’s Wild 'n Out."
"We wanted to give our scholars exposure to public impromptu speaking and improv acting," said Jason Little, a theater teacher at RGHS who helped to coordinate the visit.
In addition to the after-school workshop, Lange spent several hours throughout the school day working directly with drama students. As a graduate and instructor at The Second City and an alumnus of iO West and Upright Citizens Brigade, Lange brought professional-grade training to the classroom.
The session focused on the principles of applied improvisation, which educators say helps students develop creativity and collaboration by practicing spontaneous interaction in a low-stakes, supportive environment.
The visit was part of an ongoing effort to connect current RGHS students with successful alumni and community leaders. School and district officials expressed gratitude to Lange for volunteering his time to give back to the Ramily.
