Austim Awareness Summit

Riverview Gardens High School (RGHS) recently hosted an Autism Awareness Summit in partnership with the Special School District of St. Louis County (SSD), creating space for learning, connection, and student voice. The event was planned and organized by junior Eric McMath, with support from SSD teacher Heather Berry.

Held on April 24, 2026, the summit brought together juniors and seniors for a morning focused on understanding autism, building empathy, and encouraging self-advocacy. The event began with a kickoff at the school commons, featuring performances by the RGHS cheerleaders, Sapphires dance team, and the band and drumline.

The summit highlighted the power of peer learning, with students sharing personal insights and helping classmates better understand autism in a school setting.

“I planned this summit to help people understand autism better,” said McMath. “Autism is not a weakness. It is part of who I am, and it can be a strength. I hope people leave with more understanding and respect for others.”
