State Board of Education Approves Changes to RGSD SAB


Dear RGSD Stakeholder,


On Tuesday, December 7, the State Board of Education approved recommendations that will impact the makeup of the Riverview Gardens School District’s Special Administrative Board. The actions are part of a plan by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to gradually return Riverview Gardens School District to local governance. In an effort to keep the RGSD community informed, we would like to make you aware of the upcoming changes.  


Tuesday morning, following a presentation by Margie Vandeven, Commissioner of Education;  and Sarah Madden, Chief Counsel, the State Board of Education approved the following actions:

  • The SAB was recertified through June 30, 2024.

  • Two members will be added to the Special Administrative Board via local election (April 5, 2022). This will expand the SAB from five members to seven members.

Individuals who wish to serve as elected members of the SAB may declare their candidacy during the December 7 - December 28 filing period. 


Candidate filings will be accepted at the Riverview Gardens School District Administration Building, located at 1370 Northumberland Drive, at the following times:


Dec. 8 - 8AM-12PM, 1-4PM

Dec. 9 - 9AM -12PM

Dec. 10 - 12-4PM

Dec. 13 - 9AM - 12PM

Dec. 14 - 1-4PM

Dec. 15 - 9AM-12PM

Dec. 16 - 1-4PM

Dec. 17 - 9AM - 12PM

Closed Dec. 20-24

Dec. 27 - 10AM-12PM

Dec. 28 - 3-5PM


In addition to the items approved at the Dec. 7 meeting, DESE a tentative plan was unveiled to return RGSD to local control by June 2024. The plan included the following: 

  • Replace/re‐elect two members via local election in April 2023.

  • Replace/re-elect two members via local election in April 2024.


These additional recommendations are expected to be voted on at a later date.
