Westview 6th grade scholars in Mr. Samples' class had an incredible opportunity yesterday to participate in Skype a Scientist LIVE, where they explored the fascinating field of Biomechanics—the science of how animals move.
Students connected with Sara, a scientist who studies how water moves when animals swim, with a special focus on shrimp. She shared how her research on shrimp swimming and the swirling water patterns they create—called vortices—is helping scientists design underwater robots. These robots could one day explore the depths of Earth’s oceans and even distant oceans on moons like Europa and Enceladus.
During the session, Sara talked about her journey as a scientist, what inspires her work, and answered students’ questions live. It was a unique and engaging experience that sparked curiosity and connected classroom learning to real-world science and innovation.
We’re proud of our scholars for their curiosity and participation in this exciting event!
